A check engine light is your vehicle computer warning you that a sensor has detected a fault in the engine, emissions, or electrical system. Because the light covers hundreds of potential faults, we need to plug in our diagnostic scan tool to retrieve the specific error codes and pinpoint the exact problem.
How long does a fault diagnosis usually take?
A standard diagnostic check typically takes about an hour. This gives our mechanics enough time to scan the computer, review live data, and visually inspect the related components. If the problem involves an intermittent electrical fault or a complex wiring issue, tracing the exact short circuit may take additional time. We always communicate with you throughout the process so you know exactly what is happening.
Can I just buy a cheap code reader and fix it myself?
Basic code readers can tell you which sensor registered a fault, but they do not tell you why the fault occurred. For example, an oxygen sensor code might be caused by a vacuum leak or a failing fuel injector rather than a broken sensor. Replacing parts based solely on a code often leads to wasted money. Our technicians test the actual circuits and mechanical parts to find the true root cause.
Do you provide a quote before starting any general repairs?
Yes. Once we complete the diagnostic phase and identify the broken or failing component, we build a comprehensive repair quote. We explain exactly what needs to be replaced and why the work is necessary. We will never commence any repair work without your explicit approval first.
Will my car need to stay overnight for a diagnosis?
We aim to complete most diagnostic checks and general repairs on the same day. If your vehicle requires a highly specific part that needs to be ordered in, or if the fault is particularly complex to trace, we might need to keep the car overnight. We offer loan cars across our Midland, Malaga, and Balcatta locations so you are never left stranded.
What happens if the problem returns after I leave the workshop?
We back all our workmanship with a 12-month or 20,000 km warranty on parts and labour. If you experience any recurring issues or notice the same warning light returning after leaving the workshop, simply bring your car back to any of our three locations for a prompt inspection.
